Nutritious food needs nutrient-rich soil, and keeping nutrients in soil requires a range of measures guided by good-quality soil information. ISRIC is helping make this happen in Africa through a range of robust and accessible information systems related to land, soil, products and crops.

The ORCaSa project kick-off event occurred at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, on 26-28 October 2022. The Horizon Europe project aims to bring together all stakeholders working on soil carbon capture and storage techniques at an international level.

Wageningen University & Research and ISRIC - World Soil Information are delighted to announce that the 5th edition of the Wageningen Soil Conference will take place from August 28 - September 1, 2023. The theme of this conference edition will be: "Working together on solutions for a sustainable world." Besides interesting speakers, poster sessions and masterclasses (see below), the conference will offer an original and enjoyable social programme, including a conference dinner. ISRIC ’s work on soil spectroscopy related to GLOSOLAN has resulted in a new paper published in Soil Security: “A global soil spectral calibration library and estimation service” by Shepherd KD, Ferguson R, Hoover D, van Egmond F, Sanderman J and Ge Y.

Soil experts, data scientists and IT operators from across Europe joined a three-day training on soil data good practices in the scope of the INSPIRE directive at Wageningen University and Research in April 2022. ISRIC - World Soil Information staff organised the main portion of the modules.

The first modelling meeting of Climate Smart WATer Management and Sustainable DEVelopment for Food and Agriculture in East Africa (WATDEV) project was successfully held in Wageningen, the Netherlands from 11-12 October 2022. The main goals were to select models to be used for simulating scenarios of best management practices (BMPs) and innovations in the project study areas and development of a toolbox. The workshop was organized by ISRIC – World Soil Information and chaired by Dr Jantiene Baartman.

The second Annual Project Meeting of the H2020 Soils4Africa project was held September 2022 in Djerba, Tunisia. The general meeting sessions were followed back-to-back with meetings of the soil survey campaign coordinators in the 5 regions of Africa and the Project Executive Team (PET). The main objectives of the meetings were to strengthen partnership and ownership, update the consortium about progress and project plans as well as deliberate and propose ways for addressing project issues.

ISRIC - World Soil Information released a dashboard that provides a quick insight into the present World Soil Information Service (WoSIS) holdings.

WoSIS is a compilation of cleansed and standardised soil profile data for the world that is free and open access. The latest dynamic version is available from the ISRIC Soil Data Hub.
