Course title: World soils : Introduction to soils of the world
Course code:  
Subject areas (Curriculum): Soil Science, soil of the world and their properties
Duration: 4-40 hrs (depending on agreed curriculum)
Short description: This course provides an introduction to soils of the world and their properties. It includes: 1) introduction to the legends of the FAO-UNESCO soil map of the world and the World Reference Base for Soil Resources, 2) introduction to the 32 units of the major soil groups of the World Reference Base, 3) taxonomic criteria in WRB, ) management and use of soils the world.

Guest lecturers
Target audience: BSc and MSc level students in soil science, and students of other environmental sciences with a basic knowledge of soils
Requirements: Knowledge requirements: Basic knowledge of soils, geography, biology and chemistry. Good knowledge of English.
Programme: Lectures (each of about 45 min) on: 1) Introduction to the FAO-UNESCO soil map of the world and the World Reference Base for Soil Resources, 2) major soil groups of the World Reference Base, 3) exercise in recognition of soils according to WRB and interpretation of the properties for use.

Exercises and visits: Exercises in the ISRIC World Soil museum (field visit optional).

Objective: After this introductory course, participants should have a (general) understanding of: 1) terminology and concepts in World Reference Base for Soil Resources, 2) The groupings of major soils in the world, 3) the properties of the major soil groups of the world and their implications for use.
