World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT)

There is a wealth of know-how related to sustainable land management (SLM), improvement of soil fertility, and protection of soil resources. Most of this valuable knowledge, however, is simply not evaluated and documented - or if it is, then it remains poorly accessible, and comparison of different types of experience is difficult. This is one of the reasons why soil degradation persists, despite decades of efforts and high investments throughout the world. In this context, WOCAT was founded in 1992 as a global network of SLM specialists.

Virtual Classroom

Education is one of the pillars of our organisation. Not everyone interested in world soil information can come and visit ISRIC in the Netherlands in person. We have therefore prepared some online resources which we believe can help you increase your knowledge and skills, and at the same time provide you some insight into the work that we do.

Upcoming training events & workshops

Here is a list of our upcoming trainings and workshops worldwide. To learn more about participation options, follow the links provided for each item. We are looking forward to welcoming you in one of our courses!

Tailor-made Training Courses

ISRIC serves the international community with a wide array of tailor-made courses and lectures on world soils, soil and terrain classification, soil mapping and soil information systems, as well as on the use and importance of quality-assessed soil information to underpin sustainable management of planet Earth. The courses are designed in close consultation with clients and there is much flexibility with respect to content, duration, timing and entry level.

Soils and Water

Soil on the Earth’s surface stores two-thirds of all fresh water, and is the largest terrestrial water reservoir. Properly managing soil water resources is essential to maintain terrestrial ecosystem functions and services. ISRIC has developed the concept of Green Water Credits (GWC), assessment tools and demonstrated the GWC approach in African countries (e.g. Kenya, and Morocco) and China in order to improve management of soil water resources. In collaboration, ISRIC hopes to expand such activities to other regions at a watershed scale.

Soils and Food Security

To achieve and maintain food security, policy- and decision making is required at global to local levels requiring access to quality-assessed information at the appropriate scale. As the international reference and information centre on soils, ISRIC provides such soil information and can provide support in developing dedicated soil information systems.
