This report describes the results of the international workshop on mapping and monitoring to support Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) at global, national and local level, which was organized at GIZ Bonn, Germany on the 8th and 9th of October 2018. The workshop brought together 57 participants from 18 countries with the aim to review current use and best practice of earth observation data in mapping and monitoring processes relevant to LDN, to identify constraints and to define what needs to be done to ensure that LDN stakeholders at all levels will be supported with guidance on harmonized approaches, capacity development and access to earth observation data and other generally available data, maps and tools that support their LDN decision making needs.

The participants reviewed the user needs for Earth Observation (EO) data to support planning and local implementation of LDN activities, the needs for earth observation in monitoring and reporting at national and local level and the spatial and knowledge infrastructure that is required to support the above applications. LDN activities are carried out at various levels by various actors who do not always cooperate as intensively as desirable. Particular attention was therefore given to the question how to improve the linking between actors and processes that operate at global, national and local level.

The sessions where the above issues were discussed resulted in recommendations that were then reviewed and revised by the whole group. These include four recommendations on data for planning, four on monitoring and reporting and five recommendations on spatial and knowledge infrastructure to support the use of information in planning and in monitoring and reporting. Finally, participants proposed ideas for concept notes to develop activities as a follow up of the workshop. These recommendations and ideas for concept notes were presented and discussed in various meetings during the GEO (Group on Earth Observation) week in Kyoto, Japan.
