2030 Strategy

At ISRIC, our vision for the future is a world where reliable and relevant soil data, information and knowledge are freely available and properly used to address global environmental and societal challenges.

Soil is the foundation of life on Earth. It provides food, clean water and habitats for biodiversity while contributing to climate change adaptation and mitigation. But, soils are under threat due to population increase, demand for land for urban development, land degradation, and climate change – all factors that impact food security and the livelihoods of millions of people around the world. Therefore, protecting and restoring soil health is essential for building a food-secure, climate-resilient future.

Our work and mission centers around increasing the availability and use of quality assessed soil data, information and knowledge to contribute to the understanding of the Earth system, and better decision-making for sustainable land management around the world. This ensures that this vital resource continues to support life on earth—now and for generations to come.

To drive the above, the ISRIC Strategy 2030 will address the global challenges in soil health and ensure a healthier and resilient future for all.

Our strategy includes five focus areas

  1. Soil collections and education

ISRIC will continue its role as an international reference, information and data centre on soils, by enhancing soil data and information services, and the impact of the World Soil Museum.

  2. Standards for soil information development and provisioning

ISRIC will develop standards for soil information development and serving, together with the international community.

  3. Harmonised global and continental soil information products

Together with the international community, ISRIC will develop new, innovative methods for soil mapping and characterisation, and use these methods to produce soil information products.

  4. Soil Information Systems at the national, regional, and continental level

ISRIC will share its knowledge, expertise and experience to strengthen capacity in countries and work with partners to develop soil information and soil knowledge from national to continental level.

  5. Information products and services to assist decision-making for sustainable land management (SLM)

ISRIC will develop data to support decision-making in SLM and contribute to improvements of decision support tools and services.

ISRIC will also contribute to scientific research and innovation to support methodologies for generating soil data and information products, and will work closely with partners to advance sustainable land use and climate resilience by providing reliable, open, and globally accessible soil information.
