The aims of the SOVEUR project were to strengthen regional awareness of the significant role soils play in protecting food and water supplies, and to demonstrate the need for environmental protection. This has been achieved by the generation of a soil and terrain database and maps of soil degradation status and soil vulnerability which can focus attention upon the areas most at risk.

Projected uses and users of SOVEUR databases have been identified at an early stage, ranging from Ministries of Planning and Development in the participating countries to international organizations and societies such as FAO, UNEP and IUSS.
