At ISRIC, Luís works on geo-spatial prediction, computation, and information ontology.

Luís holds a PhD and an MSc in Information Systems and Computers Engineering (Computer Science), and an MSc in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). 

Throughout his career, he has been involved in research as a student, teacher, and scientist. He has worked at several institutions, including Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), CRP Henri Tudor, Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG). 

Luís has worked on various research topics, including hexagonal grids, information ontology, spatial simulation and global mapping.

Luís bases his work exclusively on Open Source technologies, also pursuing the principles of FAIR data and Open Science. He has committed source code to numerous open source geo-spatial projects, including PyWPS, pygeoapi, OWSLib, GeoMASON, OpenLayers, pgRouting.

Luís speaks Portuguese, French, English and Castellan.
