Bas holds an MSc in Soil inventory and Land Evaluation (2004) and Geo-Information science and Remote Sensing (2005), and a PhD (2011) in digital soil mapping from Wageningen University. From 2009 to 2012, Bas worked as a researcher for Alterra, part of Wageningen UR. His research focused on operationalizing digital soil mapping for updating soil maps for the Dutch peatlands.  Bas joined ISRIC in 2012. He is in charge of the SOTER programme, and is involved in various digital soil mapping projects from national to global level. He currently leads a project that aims to expand ISRIC's World Soil Reference Collection. Bas has expertise in (digital) soil mapping, soil classification, uncertainty analysis and the design of  sampling strategies for field data collection. Bas speaks English and Dutch.
