UNCCD side event

[11 April 2013]

UNCCD side event

During the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference a site event "Expert verification of global ecosystem degradation maps"will be organised. ISRIC World Soil Information participates in the international research consortium (see flyer), that has developed a comprehensive methodology comprising various analytical pathways to arrive at an objective and quantitative assessment of changes in various key soil characteristics (such as soil and top soil depth, SOC and texture) in the past and present, that in turn allows to quantify the impact of these changes on ecosystem functions such as water retention, food and fiber productivity, climate change, water availability, floods and droughts and biodiversity. The ultimate goal of this analysis is to include the impacts of land/ecosystem degradation into integrated global environmental assessments and outlooks such as the fourth Global Biodiversity Outlook of the CBD, UNEP’s Global Environmental Outlook and others.

The side event will be organised in Bonn, 11th April 2013 at 18.00-20.00h., World Conference Centre Room 10.
