Green water and soil diversity
Green water is stored in the soil. On farms in water-scarce agro-ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa, only some 15-30 per cent of rainfall is actually used by crops. The rest is lost. (Rockström 2001). Farmers’ knowledge of local soil-diversity is an important factor in crop management in water scarce environments.
Knowledge of soil patterns and quantification of water use efficiency gains from management practices under specific, local land and soil conditions is essential for development and extension of effective management measures.
