Ir Niels Batjes - Land resources information systems, Soils and Global Change
                            
Niels has more than 20 years experience in developing land resources information systems for national and international environmental assessment and resource development. He joined ISRIC in 1990, after having worked in East Africa and the Caribbean as a Land Evaluation Expert. He has been instrumental in developing the global WISE soil database and coordinated the FAO Soil Vulnerability Mapping project for Central and Eastern Europe. He has a special interest for research on soil carbon stocks and change, soil data analysis for global environmental applications, and contributes to the implementation of the World Soils and Terrain program. 
 
Niels is Chairman of ISRIC's Editorial Group, having an added responsibility for the website steering. As Acting Head World Data Centre for Soils (Sept. 2006 - Jan. 2007; May 2007 - Oct. 2007) he also coordinated the maintenance and digitalization of ISRIC’s WDC holdings.

Niels speaks English, French, Dutch and some German.
