Dr Otto Spaargaren – Head, World Data Centre for Soils

Otto has 30 years experience in soil survey, soil correlation, and tropical soil management. He has spent half his career in Africa and Asia with consulting companies and international development agencies; and has taught in universities in The Netherlands and overseas. He first joined ISRIC in 1979. He has special expertise in taxonomy, played a key role in the development of the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB), and is currently Secretary of the IUSS working group and moderator of the FAO Forum on WRB. Currently, he has in hand the digitisation of ISRIC’s World Data Centre holdings to make them fully accessible through the internet.
