ISRIC Staff Information

Stephan Mantel is a Wageningen University graduate, who joined ISRIC in 1993 as scientific officer land evaluation.

Stephan Mantel is a soil scientist who maintains a special interest in translating land resources data into information for land management decision-making. He assesses land use potential in regional scenario studies. As a regular advisor to the European Commission he has advised on practical methodologies for environmentally informed land use and forest management planning in Europe and SE Asia. He has conducted professional training to national soil survey officers and district government planners throughout the world.

As a contribution to UNEP's Pilot Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) pilot project he has done scenario studies on the impact of land degradation on crop production at the national level. This study linked quantitative models with spatial databases, for Kenya, Uruguay, and Argentina. Results were published in international journals.

For a sustainable forest management project, he has mapped the soil and terrain resources of a forested area in Kalimantan, Indonesia, covering 4.5 million hectares(click for flier on this project). The compiled land resources databases were used as an input for forest management and regional land use planning (more information). Besides the regional inventory he mapped a forest concession for support of sustainable forest management planning and forest fire management.

He advised a development project on a land use planning methodology that aimed to optimise water and land use in rural areas of the Pärnu River Basin, Estonia (click for flier on this project).

Technical backstopping for development of a land resources information system of Hainan Island, China at different levels of detail. Support and train local staff in automated evaluation of Hainan Island and soil resources database for land use and management planning (click for flier on this project).

Stephan is treasurer for the Netherlands Society of Soil Science (NBV).
